The Socialize Forecast - 2/27/24 @ReesaTeesa

Helen:

Welcome to the socialize forecast February 27, 2024. This is the Tuesday edition of the socialize podcast where we take you through the trends, original content ideas and social media updates of the week. Before I dive in, I have 3 reminders. 1 is our giveaway ends tomorrow at midnight. So get in on it now if you are interested.

Helen:

Link is in the show notes, and also it was in the in the newsletter today. The live podcast that we did with Skinny Taste is live was live on Friday and is still going strong because she had a lot to tell us. It was so interesting to hear from someone who started a business as a hobby in 2008 and is now boasting 7 New York Times best selling cookbooks as well as 2,000,000 followers on Instagram, and I think close to 400,000 on TikTok. She is just the most down to earth wonderful person. I urge you to listen to that.

Helen:

We learned from each other. I learned something very good from her, and she learned something very good from me. So go tune in for that one. That is episode 17. And lastly, just a reminder that today at 4 PM, I have an editing workshop.

Helen:

Shop. I'm going to be teaching a slow paced of 5th in the editing series, where I'm gonna go over key frames and how to edit very slow pace, how to do, overlapping voice over. It's just lots of fun things I'm gonna cover on this work shop, but it will be slow. So if we don't get to everything, we're gonna go at a slow pace and there'll be another one coming. Get in on that if you're interested.

Helen:

Alright. Let's dive into the updates for the week. And I'm going to start with a hot one, which is Risa Tisa. And if you don't know who that is, let me give you a little bit of a backstory. There is a creator who blew up in about 2 weeks' time from, let's say, 0 to almost 3,000,000 or maybe she's got over 3,000,000 followers now, because she shared a series that was called who TF did I marry, standing for who the fuck did I marry.

Helen:

And it is her story of a marriage briefly to a pathological liar that happened during the pandemic. The the thing about her story is I'm not quite sure. I think she seemed to record it in 10 minute segments and released it as 10 minute videos in a 50 part series. So it became, like a binge watching show that people were tuning into. She, I believe, on an average I was trying to do an average of how many views she has on this series, and I think there's averaging 8,000,000 per episode, but there's one episode, I think, that has 30,000,000 views, and then there's some episodes.

Helen:

So it depends on how long people stuck with it and how much they've listened so far, because I think there's still people tuning in daily to listen to her story. So a little bit about it. Okay. How do I break this down? It's very, very real.

Helen:

She is a very good storyteller, and she is concise, and she's also descriptive. She's funny. She's honest as hell. And it's the way she is sharing it that has really set the bar. And there are now theories all over all over TikTok, and I'm sure YouTube and wherever, people theorizing about her, her growth.

Helen:

One kind of hypothesizing on how much money she's made doing the math. They have there's creators that have made content about themselves watching her content. So it has become such a viral craze on so many levels. So it's really, really an interesting one because we haven't seen anything like this. I mean, we had the ocean spray skateboarder in 2020.

Helen:

There the Stanley tumbler craze was going. But there has been nothing like this where it's almost as if it's going to change the face of the app because of what she has done. So I wanna weigh in on this because I know that a lot of people are saying, oh, yes. See? TikTok's pushing out longer videos.

Helen:

That's why this one was successful. TikTok wants us to make longer videos. So now everybody and their mother's gonna start copying this type of format where they're gonna be telling long stories. And I have so many thoughts on this. So my first one is that no no one is going to be her.

Helen:

So just as everyone on TikTok that has a following is unique, even if they're doing the same thing as another person. So in other words, I'm a tutorial t TikTok teacher. There's tons of other people doing tutorials on TikTok and on other platforms. And I do them in a certain style. That's my style.

Helen:

So we're all unique individuals. So that's why I always say, don't stop yourself from doing something because someone else is already doing it, because you're gonna do it differently. So she is so unique, and the TikTok world fell in love with her. This does not mean everybody who now picks up their phone and starts to tell their crazy life story is gonna hit, is gonna get the views that she got. There's just so much complexity to it.

Helen:

It's her personality. It's how the world fell in love with her. It's how she told her story. It's what her story was. And so I fear a little that we're gonna see people trying to imitate by making up ridiculous stories, trying to get views.

Helen:

You're gonna have people who are gonna try and tell a similar story and think they're gonna get the same amount of views. And in fact, it's one of those things where it was a phenomenon. And it's not, in my opinion, not going to change TikTok suddenly. Now all of a sudden, we're gonna be only seeing longer format content. I don't believe that.

Helen:

I think that's still social media apps and in particular TikTok. People are looking for the quick scroll, the quick laugh, the amusement, the flip it with a thumb and get to the next thing. I don't necessarily think that overnight, we are going to see a change in the app where we're now gonna be focused on long storytelling videos. I'm just not personally buying into that. I don't think that's gonna happen.

Helen:

I don't think it's gonna happen overnight. And if in fact it hap if if in fact it happens down the road, I mean, who knows? But I don't think it's going to be an overnight change that we're gonna see, oop, all of a sudden now, all we're gonna see is people telling long stories, long format content. There's still an appetite for a quick scroll, the quick transitions, the fun edits that keep you engaged. There is still a large, large market for that.

Helen:

So I don't think we're gonna see a sudden burst of 10 minute videos powering out on the platform and being successful. That is my opinion. I actually wanna read a few comments from a video where a, creator was doing a review. And so I took the time to scroll through the comments just to see what people were saying. And this is really just solidifying some of the things that I was already thinking.

Helen:

So here's a couple. We're not gonna watch. She was the one and the only. Another person writes, the fall of TikTok starts now. Everyone will try to gain attention like Risa, which is gonna make all the content less authentic.

Helen:

Telling you the people that make comments are so smart. Why her story resonates is because it was a real story, not just her creating content of a fictional story. We've got someone else who says, her story drew me in like a book. They have to be able to tell a story like her, and that was epic. The way she told the story made the difference.

Helen:

Another guy writes, and everybody and their mama gonna try and replicate it, and they will all fail. I thought that was funny. There'll never be another like her. This was too real. She put us on game.

Helen:

Another one, she deserves nothing but the best, good for her. Now I will say she was offered by a create I'm not sure if it was a creator she was offered by or what, but she is going to on a trip to Europe. So super interesting that that's happening for her. And, curious to see where how that goes. And I think because she is a good storyteller, she is going to take it on the road and continues being successful.

Helen:

I don't think this is a one and done for Risa Tissa. I think this is, just the beginning of her explosion and glow up. I don't think this is a one and done for her. Initially, I thought, oh, well, once her story's done, what next? But because I have seen enough of her content and I see her personality, I think we've bought the the audience has bought into her.

Helen:

And I think wherever she goes now, we're gonna see her audience following. She said she's gonna take us to Europe with her. So that's gonna be really fun to watch. So that's the update. That's the Risa Tissa news.

Helen:

If you don't know it, I've linked a few of her videos so you can catch up and get rolling on the story if you're interested in watching. And all a lot of that also is linked in the newsletter. As I dive into the trends, I want to really put the question out to you as a listener. Do you like when I talk about the trends? Or do you think that is an email newsletter thing that you need to click and look at?

Helen:

So I'm going to proceed to talk about them here and I'd love some feedback. Whether you respond to the newsletter and let me know, or you can make a comment if you're watching this on YouTube or wherever. You can email, let us know. What do you prefer on this podcast? Do you like when I talk through the trends?

Helen:

Because I know it's difficult when you're not seeing the actual trend right here on video. I'm not holding it up and showing it to you, so you do have to know what it is from the newsletter. So feedback is welcome on that. The first trend is called that won't solve your problems. And this one is a nice easy photo trend because a lot of us love to travel, me personally, and I'm actually going skiing next week week with Julie.

Helen:

So I'm excited for my little trip to Jackson Hole. And the idea with this is that traveling is not going to solve your problems. So you you have a photo of yourself that's maybe looking like you're distressed about something whether you're at work or wherever, and then you proceed to have a photo carousel of a trip that you went on. So even though you're saying traveling isn't gonna solve your problems, you're showing that trip and as if it's solve solving your problems. So it's kind of a fun one if you have a trip coming up to make some quick content with some of the photos you've already taken if you were actually already on a trip.

Helen:

The next trend is called absolutely not. This is definitely a fun one and an easy one. If it's something that someone asks you and it's a completely a hard pass, this is the fun trend for you. I was trying to think about how I'm gonna use it, whether it's going to be if someone asks me if I, want to stop making TikToks, and it's gonna be absolutely not because I'm not gonna stop. Something like that.

Helen:

But you there's a lot of ways you can use this. It you can use this as a brand, as a small business, if it's something that one of your customers is asking. If you're in a corporate America and it's something your boss is asking you and it's a hard pass, you're not gonna be at a 7 AM meeting because you have a yoga class. Wink wink. Inside inside joke to Grace and Julie on that one.

Helen:

So I'd and I guess you could say inside joke to corporate Natalie on that one too. Anyway, if you know, you know, but it's a it's a trend that happened where corporate Natalie, a big creator, had posted a a controversial opinion about someone who refused to go to an 8 AM meeting because she had a yoga class. So that was a little bit of virality that happened separately. Anyway, that would be a fun one for that creator to do a video about. Absolutely not.

Helen:

I'm not coming to an 8 AM meeting because I have a yoga class. That's just an another fun example. The last trend for today is and when I'm back in Chicago. Now you don't need to be from Chicago to use this trend. The song is going viral right now with people showing off their love for the city of Chicago.

Helen:

But you can make a highlight reel of another city because the idea here is when something takes off as a trend, you can use it for other, similar uses. So you can highlight I can do it about New York City, you know, when I'm the things I love about New York City. Julie could do it about Los Angeles. So you can do it about whatever city you love because the the trend is the trend and you can make the most of it. Alright.

Helen:

Next up in the newsletter was a reminder about the giveaway, so I'll just say that again. Last chance to enter to win a content creation kit, which consists of the Saramonic microphone, my favorite microphone that plugs into my phone that I use for making my TikToks and other content. I shouldn't just say TikTok because I make all of my content goes on all the platforms. But as I always tell people who ask for advice, lean into your favorite and then farm your content out from there. So I always say TikTok because usually I'm making content for TikTok.

Helen:

Occasionally, I make Instagram tutorials for Instagram specifically. But whatever it is that you love is where you should be making your content first, and then you can farm it out to the other platforms just to keep yourself on everything, but you don't have to be really good at everything. I think that's really important. That's something I learned from Gina, who by the way, Gina from Skinnytaste. I was trying to tag her in a LinkedIn post and low and behold, she does not have LinkedIn.

Helen:

I said, wow, that's that's enlightening. Here's somebody that is so successful with her cookbooks and her platform, her recipes, and she doesn't bother with LinkedIn. She just hasn't had time for it and she didn't need it. So it's a great example that you don't have to be everywhere to be successful. So that was a little bonus tip hopping in the middle of this newsletter.

Helen:

Right. Let's move on to the original content ideas. This is, an easy one just because I I taught a tutorial recently and I've linked it in the newsletter where you can change your background. So I could film an entire video here, and then I can change it. Put the beach back there, put the city back there, put whatever I want back there.

Helen:

I can keep changing the backgrounds multiple times. And so it led me to to think about multiple character videos. So if you have not tried a multiple character video, this is a great time to try it because I've just given you the tools in this tutorial to give yourself make yourself 2 characters with 2 backgrounds and edit it very easily without moving around, without planning ahead. You can use the same space. You can record everything in the same spot, and you could make yourself into 2 people.

Helen:

So take maybe challenge yourself to make a multiple character video. And you don't have to win an Oscar. You can just take on 2 personalities, whether it's you and your customers, whether it's you and your colleagues, you and someone in your family. You can really have fun with that one. So I urge you to try and be creative and maybe tackle a multi character video for a change.

Helen:

Next up, we have interview with a friend. And, of course, I picked this one because I just recently interviewed Gina, and I had so much fun doing it. We talked about things that I didn't even expect us to tap on. She had ideas of things that she saw on my account, and I had seen something on one on one of her TikToks, and I asked her how she accomplished it. So I learned something, which I am going to share a new tutorial.

Helen:

So let you could interview from interview a friend whether it is to actually ask them something you wanna learn or just ask them some fun questions and see what their answers are. You can have a lot of fun with this one. Pick a topic. You know who I I know is gonna love this one is Sharefax for you because that is one of I think, I'm sure she's one of our listeners, but she is an avid follower, and she does a lot with her the people in her company. So she moves around from a few of her different locations, and she does she does TikToks with her other colleagues.

Helen:

So if you have a team that is up for it, if there's a dentist office you work at and everybody's game to be in it, this might be a fun thing to ask them, what is their favorite thing about their job, or what is their favorite thing about the office, what is their favorite what is their favorite thing about dentistry Okay. The last idea for today is to tell a story. I say, let's take a page out of Risa's playbook, Risa, Tisa. But I don't want you to think of this as, oh, now we have to be just like her. We have to tell this long winded story.

Helen:

No. If anything, I urge you not to try and copy what someone else is doing. I think you should think about something that might be an interesting story that you wanna tell to your audience for a reason. Maybe it's a failure you had in trying to, place an order or fulfill an order, or if it's something that you attempted as a new business and decided it wasn't worth it. It was too much work.

Helen:

Your audience can learn from your mistakes, and it doesn't have to be a mistake. It can also be a story of success. So there there's we all have stories to tell. And I noticed this recently when I was at, conference in Tampa. And the women each of the women who spoke at the conference had a story to tell.

Helen:

And it was quite riveting to listen to the different ways that we've lived and how one of them was talking about how things that happened to her in middle school impacted what she's doing now. So because we all have stories to tell and we all can learn from each other, a platform like social media, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, you have an opportunity to reach people who might need to hear your story and might learn from it, might find it relatable, might make them feel better about their own life. So this is a time to not post for people that you know. Post for someone who might need you that you do not yet know. Whom you do not yet who you do not yet know.

Helen:

I'm not even sure what the correct grammar is on that. But post for think of it as posting for people who need you to make them able to find you. That's that's what I urge you to do. And and it's gonna change how you approach your content. If you stop worrying about the people that you know that are watching that might be judging you, that is a hard it's a hard thing to do.

Helen:

I know you can do it. Alright. Let's move on to tutorials. So I did share today how to change your background because I talked about that multiple character thing, and I successfully have changed this background. So I'm gonna tell you a few quick tips about doing it that will help you.

Helen:

So the first thing you'll notice is when I'm against this backdrop, my hair color is the same as the wood color behind me. So it's going to be challenging for the app to cut out my my to cut me out, I guess, auto cut me out to fit me onto the background. However, it worked fine because I'm far enough away from the background that there was enough separation. So if you're gonna attempt something like this, try not to stand directly against the wall. Pull yourself away from the wall and make sure you're well lit from the front.

Helen:

This is the same tip if you're using green screen. Don't stand yourself smack against the wall. There needs to be some separation. That'll help you achieve it a little bit better. Alright.

Helen:

And otherwise, watch the tutorial because you're gonna learn a lot, and it's gonna be more I'm gonna teach more about this today in the 4 o'clock workshop. So if you watch that and you think, oh, that went too fast. I have questions. I don't understand something about it. 4 o'clock today is when I'm gonna be teaching that workshop, and I'm gonna be explaining it in detail and you can ask all your questions.

Helen:

The other tutorial I listed this week was the Gina, interview, learn from an expert, because I want you to listen to that podcast and see what I learned from her and what she learned from me. Anyway, that was a fun one. The last thing I have in today's newsletter is that we have, the beginner this editing series continuing. And even though I have the today one booked for teaching key frames and background changes, we are going to have another one next month that's going to be editing 106. So keep an eye out for that because this is a continuing series that is kind of capital at multiplying on itself.

Helen:

So each thing we learn, we're applying in the next week, just as I'm learning Spanish. I finally have a nice official Spanish teacher that is teaching me, and I'm studying 3 times a week with her. So pronto, I'm going to be able to create this podcast in. We can hope. Alright.

Helen:

For the music suggestions, you're gonna have to go to the newsletter for that. And if you landed here by way of a podcast or by way of another platform where we are being shared, make sure you subscribe to the newsletter so you can get all these links that I'm talking about. Because sometimes it's easier to see those and be able to click on them before listening so that you know what I'm talking about. And, obviously, on our website, hellosocialize.com, you can find our free TikTok course and all the other free workshops are posted there. Thank you as always for tuning in.

Helen:

Have a great week, and we will see you on Friday. Bye.
